Ian Wilson
Chairman of the Green Cooling Council Working Group on
CO2
Ian started out with a trade background
in fitting and machining, picking up refrigeration as a second
trade in 1990 and working as an industrial refrigeration technician
for around 10 years and picking up an engineering certificate along
the way. He then spent 12 years at Bitzer, first in Sales and then in their
production department before moving to R&D and taking over the design role
for Bitzer Australia’s compressor systems products, including
their CO2 project. European trends to impose taxes on F-gases and
develop CO2 systems inspired Ian to take on the job of developing
systems that can be made available to Australian clients.
Earlier this year Ian left Bitzer
and in February 2007 started his own company, Carbon Cold Pty Ltd,
although he continues to contract to Bitzer as a technical adviser
and R&D officer, in addition to general contracting in his
spare time.
Ian sees one of the biggest challenges
facing the refrigeration industry as being the need to work out
which of the many available natural refrigeration options is most
suitable for each of the various applications. The Green Cooling Council supermarket
refrigeration pilot scheme will be particularly helpful to improve
understanding about how different systems perform in different
climatic regions of Australia. Currently Ian is working on developing
a transcritical CO2 “toy system” into
a real full-sized system that can be used to demonstrate the
potential of this technology.
Ian is a formidable swimmer who keeps
fit by doing 3kms three times a week, and is a keen native gardener.
